The Juvenile Division handles all legal matters concerning juveniles. These cases include neglect and dependency, child status offenders, juvenile traffic offenders, as well as juvenile delinquency matters. Additionally, cases involving child support are filed and maintained pursuant to Section IV-D of the Social Security Act. The Juvenile Division handles both civil and criminal matters.

The two types of civil cases include Child in Need of Care, which are submitted by the Department of Children and Family Services, and Families in Need of Services, which can be sought individually or pursued when referred by local law enforcement agencies or schools.

The Juvenile Division is responsible for prosecuting criminal offenses committed by juveniles between the ages of 10 and 16. Beginning on March 1, 2019, all juveniles at age 17 will be under the sole jurisdiction of the Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court for misdemeanor crimes and non-violent felony crimes.  Beginning on July 1, 2020, all juveniles at age 17 will be under the sole jurisdiction of the Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court for all other violent crimes and sex crimes.

The assistant district attorneys within the Juvenile Division also participate directly or indirectly in the Children and Youth Planning Board of Jefferson Parish, the Juvenile Drug Court, educational programs for schools and law enforcement officers, the Juvenile Assessment Center and the Truancy Center.
